Projek Sihat is a resource hub for health information on COVID-19 & chronic diseases that are tailored to vulnerable communities.
COVID-19 is caused by the novel SARS-CoV-2 or commonly known as coronavirus. Even when a person does not show symptoms, the virus can spread from the mouth or nose when they cough, sneeze, speak, sing or breathe heavily to another person.
While most cases of COVID-19 are mild, the rapid spread of the virus increases the risk to vulnerable groups and also strains the health system. Any healthy individual can get severe disease, however older adults and people with underlying medical conditions are at higher risk.
In Malaysia, 7 out of 10 deaths caused by the coronavirus had one or more underlying chronic diseases. The top 5 commonly reported diseases are hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, chronic kidney disease and dyslipidaemia.
Non-communicable diseases (NCDs, or commonly known as chronic diseases) are the leading cause of death in Malaysia.
Having high blood sugar, blood pressure, and abnormal levels of fat in the blood, can lead to serious health problems. If detected and treated early, less Malaysians will have heart attack, stroke, or renal failure.
Living with a chronic disease can be challenging. Our daily life, emotional health, and loved ones can be affected. It is important to know what you can do to stay strong and well for as long as possible.
Even if you are healthy now, you should practise healthy behaviours as much as you can to reduce your risk in the future and go for regular medical check-ups. But even if you are already diagnosed, these practices will help prevent more serious and permanent health problems in the future.
We make decisions about health everyday. For ourselves, our families, and our community.
Some decisions, like not wearing a face mask, can lead to poor health outcomes (infection and being admitted to hospital).
Other decisions, like choosing to get vaccinated, are protective and lead to better health outcomes.
All of us need to access health information and support to make the best decision for our health, not just for the coronavirus.
The leading cause of poor health is non-communicable disease (NCD) or chronic diseases, which leads to severe illness and deaths among those who were infected with COVID-19.
“They [Older adults] are not so compliant to [taking] medication because of misinformation. After they watch [videos], they understand and start taking medication again.”
“There are misunderstandings in what the doctor is saying and what a deaf person understands.”
“The community at large have materials (Health issues) to read on, but materials (Health issues) in Bahasa Isyarat Malaysia (BIM) for the Deaf Community is zero.”
“Migrant populations may be susceptible directly and/or indirectly to the impact of COVID-19 through issues such as their living and working conditions, ability to access health-care services, limited local knowledge of host communities, lack of information, inadequate hygiene facilities and practices, and limited social networks.”
This project focuses on building a resource hub on COVID-19 and NCDs for three communities – the Deaf, the elderly, and the migrant community.
It also aims to advocate for health services, public sector, & private institutions to be more responsive to health literacy needs in our society.
